My buddy Alex Haldi is having an art opening this evening in NYC for his exhibition called “Glorification Of Gangster.” Its a collection of work inspired by our culture’s fascination with crime. To go along with the opening, Alex rounded up a few musicians to contribute covers, originals, and remixes of songs that fit the theme of the show as a mixtape. Alex contacted me and suggested a huge list of tracks for me to consider covering. The very first one on the list was Jane’s Addiction’s “Been Caught Stealing.” I recalled the bass line to that song and literally stopped reading the list. The song screams for the RAC texture… so that was that. I started recording the song from scratch, using the original as my tracing template. I wanted to do a full-on cover, few deviations from the original except sonic considerations. I spent a good portion of the time learning the guitar solo; ripping up my fingers in the process… its been so long since I played guitar like that! I hit a bit of wall when I realized I had to find someone to sing it. Perry Farrell is no easy cover. Then I realized that my high school friend and band mate, Sean Chyun, would fit the gig perfectly. I’m pretty sure its safe to say he absolutely NAILED it. Fun. Enjoy. - Andrew
